Notes from Wednesday 1st March
· Base the piece on memory?
· Have more than one room? We want the museum room
· Look at it from Henry’s perspective, then look at it scientifically?
· What’s the title of the show now? What would our title be if it wasn’t forgetting Tom? –Fantasy Logic, Theory logic, I don’t remember the future, I won’t remember the future, in search of lost time, Future is memory, Two sides of the brain, Art vs Science.
· Henry’s story – Science explains his loss of memory in one way, Henry explains it in another
· Story of Henry so far – Back story, injury, death, brain, brain in the brain observatory, testing on brain.
· Memory thief taking Henry’s memory
· Scientific/Fantasy
· Medical student, When Henry looks at him he sees a memory thief…..
· Brain observatory? Promenade?
· 2 perspectives in each room?
· Doctors glasses, he is a doctor, but with a change of the glasses we see someone different through Henry’s eyes.
· Where does the NBT room fit in?
· Silks in the brain room
· Doctors explain Henry’s memory loss in one way, Henry explains it in another, through light change, use of silks…..
· Use hospital screens – one side it’s a screen, the other side it is something else.
· Corridor.. opposite rooms… one side is scientific, the other side is Henry’s memory and Henry’s perspective.

Toby’s Memory
· Toby guides audience around the memory
· He is narrating while he is explaining his emotions to the audience
· Two other actors are acting out the memory, following directions
· Regular memory? Or over exaggerated romantic memory?
· People acting change the way that they are performing
· We then decided that we cannot act out two versions of this memory, because we only have Toby’s perspective of the memory, so we couldn’t do it from the girls point of view, or an outsiders point of view as we don’t have them.
Parts we played –
· Ria – The Girlfriend
· Rory – Toby
· Toby – Narrator and Director
· Brittany and Shaune – Introduce the piece.
Ria and Rory act out the scene, Toby is explaining to her how he wants the scene to be acted, but the actors keep on getting it wrong, so Toby has to keep stopping them and re- directing them to do it again and differently…. The actors keep on getting it wrong, so he eventually pushes Rory out of the scene and finishes it himself the way he wanted it acted out in the first place!

We began by coming into the room and telling our audience that we are all ‘Single memories’ but together, we are a ‘collective memory’
We asked… Where were you on September 11th 2007?
This is a collective memory for a huge amount of people, in many countries, as the events of this day had an effect on many people, in many ways and most people remember where they were when they heard the news of this event…
We then moved on to a collective memory, of just our class… We took the group back to our first day of uni, where we were all sitting in Studio 8, waiting for Lisa to come to the room…
Most of us remembered where abouts we were sitting, and we all very much remembered how we felt on this day… and simple line like Tom saying ‘Soooo’ or ‘So, you’re an electrician’, made us all remember the day even more vividly, because we were then all remembered that exact moment…. Having a Collective memory.

Crossroads?
Where are we in the devising process?
Final designs by next week mean we are nearing some final decisions.
What style of theatre are we creating so far?
Do we like the focus on science?
Do we keep the separate, fragmented spaces with Henry and the brain observatory the only through line?
Or,
Do we go back with all that we know and make one story? A story about memory, a memory thief? One memory seen through different perspectives? The scientific, the fairy tale, the different characters?
Is this henry' story much more? Is he searching for something?
Do we fragment the telling but not the tale?
Tomorrow we will try out a different approach of finding one story. As an experiment. For a morning.
To put our process in context read up about other companies' processes and compare. See suggested reading on unit brief.
WhAt theAtre do we want to Make? How do we engage the audience? In a story? In an experience? In a narrative? One person's journey or the story of a space?
